Frank Lampard left the club this summer after 13 glittering years, and has since joined title rivals Manchester City on a short-term loan from sister club New York City FC.

Mourinho admits Chelsea's signing of former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, however, will not fill the hole the England man has left at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to Rio Ferdinand for BT Sport, he said: 'Fabregas is the player we need to modify a little bit the profile of our game. We want to give the next dimension to our game in midfield.

Mourinho told Sky Sports News: 'He’s a great addition for us. He is a fantastic player. Technically he is very, very good.

'That’s why lots of the players are so happy and so surprised, because his quality is even higher than what they expect.

'He's so strong physically and gives so much effort during matches. He’s a great addition for us. He's a fantastic player.

Chelsea boss, Mourinho is pleased with his present attacking options

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is pleased with the atackng options he will have in the 2014/15 season- and believes that Diego Costa is an excellent addition to his side.

Costa impressed last season at Atletico Madrid as they won th Spanish title, and Mourinho snapped the Spaniard up earlier in the summer, meeting his £32million release clause.

"He wanted to be the only first choice striker which is not possible. That reduced immediately his desire to come to us. After that, Everton came with an important offer and because we want to be inside financial fair play rules, you have to analyse these situations.”
